Global Warming and the California Wildfires

Global warming makes wildfires more likely and more destructive -- as many scientific studies have concluded. Why? Global warming leads to more intense droughts, hotter weather, earlier snowmelt (hence less humid late summers and early autumns), and more tree infestations (like the pine beetle). That means wildfires are a dangerous amplifying feedback, whereby global warming causes more wildfires, which release carbon dioxide, thereby accelerating global warming.
The climate-wildfire link should be a special concern in this country where, since 2000, wildfires have burned an area larger than the state of Idaho.
I write this as my San Diego relatives wait anxiously in their hotel room to find out if their Rancho Santa Fe home has been destroyed. This is a beautiful home that I lived in for a month when I moved to the area in the mid-1980s to study at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Can we say that the brutal San Diego wildfires were directly caused by global warming? Princeton's Michael Oppenheimer put it this way on NBC Nightly News Tuesday:
The weather we've seen this fall may or may not be due to the global warming trend, but it's certainly a clear picture of what the future is going to look like if we don't act quickly to cut emissions of the greenhouse gases.
Thomas Swetnam, University of Arizona climate scientist, who coauthored a major study on the subject (see below) said in 2006:
We're showing warming and earlier springs tying in with large forest fire frequencies. Lots of people think climate change and the ecological responses are 50 to 100 years away. But it's not 50 to 100 years away--it's happening now in forest ecosystems through fire.I researched wildfires for my book -- hence the "Hell" in Hell and High Water -- and my view is closer to Swetnam's for several reasons.
First, Southern California is experiencing the "driest year in 130 years of recordkeeping," precisely the kind of extreme weather event we expect from climate change. We are seeing record droughts around the country -- and around the world. Some scientists fear we are at risk of shifting the climate to "a permanent drought by 2050 throughout the Southwest."
Second, we aren't just seeing bad wildfires, we are seeing record-shattering wildfires. The
2005 wildfire season, which ravaged 8.7 million acres, was record-breaking, and the record it broke was from 2000, when wildfires consumed 8.4 million acres. The 2006 wildfire season easily surpassed 2005, with a stunning 9.9 million acres burned. The
2007 wildfire season is also on a pace to beat 2005.
The August 2006 Science cover story, "Warming and Earlier Spring Increase Western U.S. Forest Wildfire Activity" (subs. req'd) that Swetnam coathored with three Scripps researchers explicitly examined and then rejected the theory that land-use and fire-supression practices were the cause of the surge in wildfires since the mid-1980s.
Some global warming deniers may cross their fingers and call it all a coincidence and criticize the (few) journalists that even raise the wildfire-climate connection. But in fact, a major 2004 study warned that things will get much, much worse if we don't take action soon to reverse greenhouse gas emissions trends. Researchers at the U.S. Forest Services Pacific Wildland Fire Lab looked at past fires in the West to create a statistical model of how future climate change may affect wildfires. Their work suggests that "the area burned by wildfires in 11 Western states could double ... if summer climate warms by slightly more than a degree and a half" centigrade. On our current emissions path, this is likely to happen by mid-century. By century's end, states like Montana, New Mexico, Washington, Utah, and Wyoming could see burn areas increase five times.
The third reason to worry about the climate-wildfire connection is that
wildfires are a classic amplifying feedback, since burning forests release
carbon dioxide that accelerates global warming. As the 2006 Science article concludes soberly:
... virtually all climate-model projections indicate that warmer springs
and summers will occur over the region in coming decades. These trends will reinforce the tendency toward early spring snowmelt and longer fire seasons. This will accentuate conditions favorable to the occurrence of large wildfires, amplifying the vulnerability the region has experienced since the mid-1980s. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's consensus range of 1.5° to 5.8°C projected global surface temperature warming by the end of the 21st century is considerably larger than the recent warming of less than 0.9°C observed in spring and summer during recent decades over the western region.
If the average length and intensity of summer drought increases in the Northern Rockies and mountains elsewhere in the western United States, an increased frequency of large wildfires will lead to changes in forest composition and reduced tree densities, thus affecting carbon pools. Current estimates indicate that western U.S. forests are responsible for 20 to 40% of total U.S. carbon sequestration. If wildfire trends continue, at least initially, this biomass burning will result in carbon release, suggesting that the forests of the western United States may become a source of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide rather than a sink, even under a relatively modest temperature-increase scenario. Moreover, a recent study has shown that warmer, longer growing seasons lead to reduced CO2 uptake in high-elevation forests, particularly during droughts. Hence, the projected regional warming and consequent increase in wildfire activity in the western United States is likely to magnify the threats to human communities and ecosystems, and substantially increase the management challenges in restoring forests and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
My thoughts are with my San Diego relatives and the stunning half-million evacuees -- a Katrina-like exodus. We are simply running out of time to stop all of the carbon cycle feedbacks from intensifying and to stop these devastating, record-breaking wildfires from becoming the normal climate.

I am a Democrat. I have been a Democrat since I was 18 years old. I am 49 years old today, so do the math. My father and both of my grandparents were Democrats.... from FDR to Truman to JFK and so on...
But today Michael Jackson has more balls than the Dems in Congress. They keep saying crap like they don't have the votes to override a veto, but they do have the Constitutional Authority to legislate funding or removal of funding for a war. And only the Congress can authorize War as well as un-Authorize... Read the Constitution under Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of the United States Constitution, sometimes referred to as the War Powers Clause, vests in the Congress the exclusive power to declare war, in the following wording:
"To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;"
Again the Congress has the Sole Authority to Declare War... so it is the responsibility of Congress to say FUCK YOU MR. PRESIDENT. The War in Iraq is over!!!!
The Congress not the President decides on War Policy.... Read The Constitution!!!! Therefore, they with a simple majority can say no more funds!!! And that's it. They can also put pressure since they are power of the purse to withhold funds for all and I mean all Executive Offices... They can also summon subpoenas and implement impeachment if there is contempt by the White House. If anyone needs case history, just read the Supreme Court decisions in the 1970's during Watergate and President Nixon.

The body of a Christian official who was kidnapped over the weekend was discovered in Gaza City early Sunday, Palestinian sources said.

His bookshop and the Palestinian Bible Society have been the targets of repeated attacks over the past two years.
They noted that attacks on members of the 2,500-strong Christian community in the Gaza Strip have increased in recent months, especially since Hamas took full control of the area.
Two weeks ago, an elderly Christian woman living in Gaza City was beaten and robbed by a masked man who accused her of being an "infidel." In Bethlehem, Palestinian Authority police are still investigating last week's stabbing of a 27-year-old Christian man, who was seriously wounded in the attack.
Shortly after the Hamas takeover, a local Christian school and a monastery were looted and set on fire.
News of Ayyad's murder shocked his friends and family and raised fears that the Hamas government, despite repeated promises, was not able to protect the local Christian community.
Ayyad went missing over the weekend, and his family and friends rushed to lodge a complaint with the Hamas security forces.
Ihab Ghissin, spokesman for the Hamas Interior Ministry - the institution responsible for security - said the body was discovered in an agricultural field known as Dunum Abu Daf, near Gaza City's Zeitun neighborhood.
He refused to specify the cause of death, only saying that the body had been transferred to a local hospital for a forensic examination. However, Palestinian reporters told the Post that Ayyad had been fatally stabbed.
"This despicable crime won't pass without punishment of the perpetrators," Ghissin said. "We will pursue all those involved in this case and make sure that they are severely punished."

This morning, President Bush rejected health care for children. Now it's time for Democrats to reject President Bush.
If we can get 2/3 of Congress to stand up to President Bush, we can overturn his veto on the State Children's Health Insurance Program -- a program that provides health insurance for millions of kids.

George Bush made a cold political calculation this morning. He could have signed this bi-partisan bill into law, or he could have pandered to conservatives who didn't want to see the Children's Health Insurance Program get the funding it needs.
He decided to pander -- and millions of kids will suffer for it.
What makes this veto worse is that George Bush will spend billions of dollars in Iraq, some of it on contractors like Blackwater and Halliburton, while denying millions of children needed doctors' visits or medicine here at home.
On top of that, all of the Republican candidates for president support his veto.
Democrats are in the majority for a reason. Send a message to your Senators and Representative and let them know why that is:

This past week, Graeme Frost, a 12 year old from Baltimore, Maryland, delivered this week's Democratic Radio Address.
Graeme is a brave young man. Three years ago, his family was in a serious car accident. Graeme was in a coma for a week, suffered severe brain trauma, and had to re-learn how to eat and walk.
Graeme is alive today because of the State Children's Health Insurance Program. As he said last weekend:
"My parents work really hard and always make sure my sister and I have everything we need, but the hospital bills were huge. We got the help we needed because we had health insurance for us through the CHIP program.
"I don't know why President Bush wants to stop kids who really need help from getting CHIP. All I know is I have some really good doctors. They took great care of me when I was sick, and I'm glad I could see them because of the Children's Health Program."

As a doctor, I've seen our country's health care crisis first-hand.
I've seen parents that have to wait for their kids to get dangerously sick before they could take them to a doctor. I've seen parents struggle over important medical care decisions because they didn't know how to pay for it. And I've seen parents left in poverty because they had no other choice.
But you don't have to be a doctor to understand the importance of health insurance for our nation's kids. Just ask any mother or father whose child has been sick, and they'll all tell you the same thing: that there's nothing more important to them than making sure their kids are healthy.
